Insights From An Insider With Zach Trepanier, General Manager

Local and traveling golfers love to research courses before playing them, whether it is to gain some local knowledge or to set an expectation before their upcoming round. Below is an interview with Zach Trepanier who shares some valuable insight about the property, its most talked about holes and the signature dish/drink to consume at the 19th hole.

How Does Your Course Differ From The Others In The Area?
Whispering Springs has bentgrass from tee to green, offering the same premium surface that the pros play on. While bentgrass is not entirely rare in Wisconsin, it is rare to see a public course offer it at such an affordable rate. We believe that this is a large contributor to our course frequently named as one of the state's best values.

In addition to a premium surface, our course continually advertises that no two holes are alike. Thanks to a Bob Lohman design, our course will always keep you thinking.

For someone who has not played the course in awhile, has there been any new changes/renovations to the course or property?
Yes. In 2008 the course changes ownership and underwent a complete facility remodel. The new facility offers a full service golf shop as well as a bar and grill with a full menu. Upstairs, we have one of the finest banquet facilities in the area that accommodates everything from golf outings to corporate meetings to weddings.

What is your course's answer to Amen Corner? (Describe your best/hardest 3 back/back/back holes)
Our Amen Corner is actually our Amen Finish with holes 16, 17 and 18 rated as the three hardest handicapped holes on the back nine. Hole 16 is a long par four with a sloped fairway; hit it to the right from the tee and you will likely be punished with a daunting shot into the tricky, undulating green. Hole 17's tree lined, dog leg right requires a thoughtfully placed tee shot in order to have a palatable shot into the elevated green. Though it may not look it, the green on 17 can also be quite tough to read. Should you make your way around 16 and 17 unscathed, you still need to keep your wits as you head into the par five 18. With water running to the left of the fairway throughout the hole, it's essential you keep the ball on the right side and away from danger. The shot into 18 is usually trickier than it seems as the wind usually plays heavily in the shot selection.

In tournament play or even friendly matches, our "Amen Finish" provides a stage for an exciting and suspenseful finish.

What is your course's claim to fame, or is there a little known fact that golfers should know about the property?
A neat fact about Whispering Springs is that it rests atop "the ledge" that overlooks Fond du Lac. "The Ledge", as it is commonly referred to in the area, is actually known as the Niagara Escarpment and is a world famous geologic feature. For us, it provides a clear view of Fond du Lac, Lake Winnebage and beautiful sunsets It also helps the course drain better than almost any course in the state.

What tournaments/events have you (recently) hosted or will be hosting?
In 2009 we hosted the WPGA Women's Open. In 2010 we hosted the WSGA State Match Play. In 2011 we hosted the WWSGA State Women's Stroke Play Championship. In 2012 we had the WPGA State Sr. Championship. We look to host at least one state event every year. We are also one of the state's largest qualifier locations for the PGA's Drive, Chip & Putt competition.

Besides golf, what other amenities do you offer if a golfer wants to spend most of the day at your facility?
Other than golf, Whispering Springs has an awesome bar & grill called Trep's Trap. We have a full menu that mimics our parent restaurant, Trepanier's Grill & Bar. Our restaurant background gives us a leg up on a lot of other golf course food and we continue to redefine golfers' idea of what golf course food is all about.

Signature sandwich or drink?
It's always hard to pick a single item from a menu that offers such a variety, but we get a lot of golfers who love our Door County salad with chicken. With fresh feta cheese, granny smith apples, sweet dried cherries and a raspberry vinaigrette, it's an extremely refreshing dish after a round of golf in the sun. Our other big food attraction happens every Thursday for Steak Day. We have golfers make special trips to take advantage of our Steak Day deal where they get a discounted steak dinner with a round of golf. There's two things than most men love: a good steak and a round of golf.
